For what its worth, I connect my Kindle to Calibre an then have my Calibre folder synced in Ubuntu One. Currently 500mb of my Ubuntu One account is my Calibre folder. I know that Amazon keeps a copy of all my purchased books, but for documents I create myself or other content I generate to read later its much easier to manage my Kindle like this.
